Dubstep 4/12/10

So here are a few more tunes you may, or may not, have heard. Some really great artists coming out with wicked tunes recently, and it pretty much makes me want to wet myself.

Couple weeks ago couldn’t get this tune out of my head, and it’s back in again:

Amazing mix, made by one of the monster’s of Dubstep. Well worth the listen if you have not yet. Have to say my favorite track, and it’s difficult to say with so many great tracks, is Datsik – Firepower off this mix. But so many good tunes thrown at you at once.

Steve Angello humiliates Paris Hilton

While having happened over a year ago, the story is that Steve Angello humiliated Paris Hilton at a WMC event in 2009. While many folks may have heard about this, I had not until today. And so this is the information I have gathered.

I was greatly amused by this, because it shows fame and wealth won’t change a DJ’s mind when he’s set on playing the music he wants to play. It’s a great step in showing who is actually in charge of the music at an event. No matter what happened, it’s blown up beyond proportion because Paris Hilton is a stupid twat. And that’s my opinion on the matter.

The DJ is the only one in charge of music. Flat out and simple, though the crowd is what persuades them. Not some random celebrity.

Laidback Luke’s Studio

While browsing DJForum.com I stumbled across this little gem. This is a Studio tour with Laidback Luke.

Pretty amazing what he does using Fruity Loops and a midi keyboard. Really amazing honestly. I have to give him props for having such a minimalistic setup and making such banging tunes.

Genre’s.

Genre’s of music. It’s all incredibly hard to keep track of at first. And learning which tune is what exact form of whatever music is something that comes with time, there is no “red flag” to stand up and tell you what it is.

Now I’ll completely admit that I’m not the best at this. It’s taken me awhile, and years of listening, to understand the complexities of electronic music. And there are still some styles which I really can’t name, just because I’m fairly particular when it comes to what I enjoy and immerse myself in.

As I’ve said before, I generally only listen to a few styles; Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Breaks, and Electro House. I appreciate the other styles, but those are the ones that I really like to groove out to. Throw some minimal or trance at me, and I’d probably be at a loss for words about the particulars of it.

There’s a link on the right side of this blog to Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music. It’s worth taking a look at if you haven’t seen it before. It is a bit dated at the moment, I remember looking through it in High School right around the turn of the century. But it has a great history of a lot of different genre’s.

The one thing that is constantly bothering me lately, is people are coming up with all sorts of new genre’s to label things with. House music has a million different genre’s, and things are honestly bridging across genre as well. I mean, deep house is different than electro house, but sometimes fidget house has some electro vibe to it. It gets difficult.

And with Dubstep, it’s the opposite in a way. Everything with that slow drum line and wubbly bass, is labeled dubstep. There’s the laid back chill stuff, and then the all out filthy shit your pants disgusting stuff. And there’s no easy way to tell a difference between the two label wise.

There’s no real easy solution to being able to name the genre of a tune by ear except by listening to a lot of different styles of music. As time goes on, and new styles immerge (ie Dubstep is a recent addition), it gets even more difficult. But in the end, it’s all worth the time to try and figure it out.

Starting Up.

As I create this blog, I plan on keeping an updated list and source for the music I listen to.

As I, for the most part, only listen to EDM (Electronic Dance Music) I will be primarily posting about that. And in particular, whatever is catching my fancy lately. I generally listen to Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Breaks, and Electro House. So go from there.

I am also working on becoming somewhat of a DJ. Albeit slowly, but will be documenting what I am learning here as well. I will review, to my own degree, how I feel about different pieces of software and hardware that I encounter.

Living in Massachusetts, I have traveled across the eastern seaboard to go to different shows. Not often, but for the ones that really catch my own, and my friend’s, fancy. I will also talk about different shows that I go to as well.

Anyhow, I plan on making this a great reference to those interesting in EDM, entering stage DJ’s, and those whom just love the scene.
